Trench warfare has its good qualities but not that many. The trenches served for protection, communication ,quick service, gun service. The soldiers had telephone lines inside the trenches for communication between the men who had access to food and guns. They would send a messenger in the middle of the battle to give an important message to the soldiers. The trenches had at least 250,000 square miles of trench so they had better advantage, a network of tunnels, they weren't out in the open, safe from fire, shelter from the enemies attack.
The trenches were dug in zig zag patterns to confuse the enemy if they somehow got inside, and the soldiers could move through easily if in a rush(Trenches). The trenches were basically their home. The soldiers slept, ate, played card games, cleaned their weapons, communicated with other soldiers, had me time wrote to their loved ones, anything to kill time. It was important to the men because it gave them time to recoup, relax, have fun. this picture shows how the soldiers are sitting down to eat and relax. If the soldiers didn't have a time of relaxation then that would make them even crazier than living in the trenches.
